Adventuring to the delightful town of Malmedy in Belgium, just past the Spa racetrack, Malcolm Dunderdale and Anita Wickins entered the Classic Spring Roads Rally together with three other UK crews.
There were three options, a two day Tulip style event, a one day Tulip, map and TC section (Classic) and a similar but more difficult Classic Plus, both incorporating a night section with instructions passed through the window at the start of each section. And when we say map we really mean a single line drawn on an otherwise blank sheet of paper…
Trailering their 1973 Renault 12 Gordini via the Tunnel the crew arrived a day early for the Saturday 22nd March start to savour the delights of the old town, the rich history of the area and the delicious wares of the local (and immensely popular) boulangerie.
The event was fun filled, fast and furious with one regularity quickly followed by the next as the rally uses the Tripy system where GPS tracking takes the place of human marshalling, on tight narrow roads and tracks in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany finishing at 22.30 with a prize giving and very welcome beer.
A fifth place finish in the Classic event for Malcolm and Anita and best placed mixed crew crowned a wonderful few days. A very different type of event, warm and welcoming organisers, highly recommended to all UK crews looking for something a little different.
